With the increasing power density of electric vehicles and the rapid development of energy storage systems, battery thermal management technology is becoming an industry focus. Traditional air cooling or cold plate liquid cooling solutions are increasingly unable to meet the extreme heat dissipation and safety requirements of high-rate charge and discharge scenarios. Against this backdrop, battery immersion cooling has begun to gain attention.

Battery Immersion Cooling

The core of this technology is to directly immerse the battery cells in an insulating coolant, achieving highly uniform heat dissipation with a temperature differential within 1°C. This approach not only significantly reduces the risk of thermal runaway and fire, but also has the potential to extend battery life by 10–30%. It is undoubtedly a highly promising battery thermal management solution for future high-power electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

However, immersion battery cooling still faces many challenges before it can be widely adopted.

1. The coolant itself is expensive.

2. The sealing design and system integration requirements for battery modules are more complex.

These two major issues have kept this solution largely confined to the laboratory and early demonstration stages. In contrast, mature battery thermal management systems, such as liquid battery cooling, remain the mainstream choice, offering greater feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
